Bald Eagle Nest Information 2013

Juv Eagle A-89Photo by Jim Campbell-Spickler

This nesting season the Channel Islands Bald Eagle Restoration Program reached a milestone: a second generation eagle successfully fledged! Tagged "A-89", she is the offspring of A-49, who was the first eagle to hatch naturally on the islands in over 50 years (2006). In 2012, at 6 years of age, A-49 began nesting on Santa Cruz Island. She had 1 chick who unfortunately died after a few days. This year, A-49 nested with A-64 at Fraser Point, where A-89 successfully fledged.

In total, there were 15 breeding pairs on 4 of the 8 islands (7 on Catalina, 1 on Anacapa, 5 on Santa Cruz, and 2 on Santa Rosa). A total of 18 chicks were produced, of which 16 successfully fledged. See table below for a nest summary (A. Little, U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service).
