Eagle 45/D (aka Alo) from the Bald Canyon eagle nest on San Clemente Island swallowed a fishing hook attached to a fish on 6/1/23. We rescued and transported him to a rehab facility near San Diego on 6/2/23. Please see the updates below. Thank you to everyone that contributed to help with his care.

Status Updates:

6/3/23: The fish hook is in the lower GI tract and “free-floating”. The veterinarian was unable to remove it endoscopically. A specialist will be examining 45/D on 6/4 and a plan will be developed for the hook removal.

6/4/23: A second endoscopic removal attempt was unsuccessful in reaching the hook. The treatment team is attempting one last trick before resorting to surgery - feeding him fish stuffed with cotton balls to either elicit vomiting or to provide padding around the hook as it moves through the digestive system. This is believed to be less risky than surgery. The next update is expected late evening on 6/5/23.

6/6/23: Alo has been eating and pooping, but the hook has not moved. The center is calling the surgeon today to try to schedule a surgery for 6/7. Recovery would likely be several weeks. Alo is feisty and doing well overall. Thank you to our supporters for donating over $6400 for his care and recovery so far. We will forward that on soon and continue to collect donations for his future care.

6/7/23: Sad news. Although the surgery to remove the hook that was embedded in Alo's stomach went well, he rapidly declined after the surgery and went into cardiac arrest. He was revived temporarily, but died shortly after. He will be sent for a necropsy, but their current theory is zinc toxicosis from the hook. We thank the rehab facility for their valiant efforts and our donors for supporting them. The proceeds raised will be forwarded soon.

8/11/23: We just received some information from California Fish & Wildlife in regards to Alo's necropsy. Alo's necropsy reported the cause of death as "hypovolemic shock" following the surgery to remove the fish hook from the stomach. Screening for heaving metals is still pending. We will post an update as soon as we receive those results. We again thank the rehab facility for their valiant efforts in trying to save Alo and our generous donors for supporting them. The proceeds raised have been forwarded and will aid in covering the associated costs of Alo's treatments and care.
